Overview The board of directors is an organ undergoing intense scrutiny and change. Being a board director was once a sinecure, an easy role to play in the twilight of one's career. These days it is a position that comes with great demands attached: to be a 'watchdog' as well as a 'navigator'; to understand the big strategic picture as well as minute financial details; to guide and inspire as well as to monitor and control. At the end of the day, members of the board of directors carry the final responsibility for the success or failure of the organisation.
Modern directorships are not to be taken lightly, but they often are. It is a job without a description, a journey without an orientation. SBS's The Effective Director (TED) aims to fill that gap in East Africa. It is the first course designed for board directors that focuses on the job itself: the roles that a director must play; the skills he or she must bring into play; and the styles and nuances of behaviour on boards.
In short, TED is a program about adding value as board director. It is aimed at all board members, new and old, and aims to provide a refreshing, lively and interactive forum for genuine learning about this most important of positions.
